Fans of Knives: Special Edition

It has been a long while since we’ve had a Fans Special Edition, but here we are. What, you might ask, is deserving of a Special Edition? Is it something neat from Blizzard? Is it a spectacular return of a beloved fan resource? Nope, it’s academics. The opportunity to learn about IRL from our amazing other lives doesn’t happen every day and Kermoondia is giving us the chance to do just that.

Hi everybody! I’m a data science student, and for my Honors capstone I am researching motivations and play styles in WoW relative to demographics, play style, and socialization. Have you ever wondered how a person’s IRL characteristics correlate with who and how they play in-game? That’s what we’re trying to find out! The results of this study are to be presented at a national conference as well as published in a peer-reviewed journal. We appreciate everyone’s participation, and we would especially appreciate trying to spread the survey as far as possible! We want as diverse a group of players as we can get. As of right now, we have over a thousand respondents from all over the world, and we hope to continue to grow that number! 18+ only.

So what do you say? Let’s help a fellow Azerothian out. Here’s the link:

Aaaand Fans goes monthly. That’s ok, when things pick up, so will we. So what has happened in the last month? BlizzCon, that’s what. Next expansion announcement. And a few juicy details.

So Shadowlands. Life, death and all that. But what does that mean for rogues? Brian Holinka talked about a few things that we will see. He mentioned that they feel that in Legion classes and specs got somewhat lost despite the intention to spotlight them, but in Shadowlands, emphasis will be on class over spec. A couple of specifically rogue items:

  • Poisons are going back to being classwide
  • Shiv is coming back classwide

So Legion saw us defined into assassins, pirates, and ninjas. Shadowlands sounds like it will see us going back to being rogues first and sharing in some iconic abilities that may have been removed from us in the last couple of expansions. It will be exciting to see how that plays out.

In other news, for Classic rogues, Rokman of Wowhead has a BiS gear guide for us:

Well now it’s been a slow few weeks, hasn’t it. But things actually did happen. Like patch 8.2.5, Rise of Azshara, dropped. Updated character models gave a few of us a facelift. And we got a tiny thing:

  • Blind’s debuff is now displayed on enemy nameplates.

And there are the subsequent expected tiny hotfixes:

  • Assassination: Fixed an issue that caused the tooltip of Fan of Knives to display an incorrect amount of Combo Points.
  • Outlaw: Resolved an issue that prevented the Crimson Vial created by Drink Up Me Hearties (PvP Talent) from being useable.

Sources:

Assassination Rogues probably already know this but three of our own, Kojiyama, Seliathan and Flawless, sat down to chat with Bay on FinalBossTV:

Well, we were warned, but that doesn’t make it any easier: Outlaw nerfs:

  • Blade Flurry now strikes nearby enemies for 30% of normal damage (was 45%).
  • Keep Your Wits About You (Azerite Trait) now increases the chance for Sinister Strike to strike again by 3% (was 5%) and the maximum number of stacks has been increased to 33.

Developers’ notes: While multi-target cleave is an iconic strength for Outlaw Rogue, we feel that Blade Flurry is currently too strong, particularly in Mythic Keystone dungeons. Likewise, the Azerite Trait Keep Your Wits About You provides too much added value to their area-of-effect rotation at only a single instance of the trait. These changes should keep Outlaw Rogues very strong at multi-target cleave, but no longer significantly ahead of other specs.

Infexious has a few new videos including a look at Benthic gear, farming, and Boss DPS guides. You know the drill: watch at your own risk – Ravenholdt is not responsible for You Tube shenanigans. But if you like your rogue thinking out of the box, check this guy out.

So remember that whole “if no one does anything we’ll have to be monthly” thing? Yeah, well we’ve been saved this week. Hooray!

Remember Shadow Panther? If you do, you are a true rogue. Classic is swiftly approaching, and if you are planning to play, rejoice: he has updated his site!

We have a couple of new You Tube videos. You know the drill: watch at your own risk – Ravenholdt is not responsible for You Tube shenanigans.

First, Infexious killed Mythic Ashvane. Watch his raid do the deed:

And Skwiggle has an Assassination guide.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to respec Sassy.

Did you miss this from last time? Yup, Ravenholdt super-rogue head gear. Send us a pic of you in your Ravenholdt gear and we’ll put it on the site (assuming it’s y’know, respectable).

So we are all busy playing and not producing a whole lot of content. I guess that’s good…right? But we are at risk of this becoming a monthly blog. Just saying.

Here at Ravenholdt we are offering our Assassination Guide in German thanks to translator, LordMacGyver:

And we have a new amazingly awesome item in our store. IRL transmog on point:

Got rogue questions and comments, or just want to chat with like-minded players, head to our Discord:

Want to watch other rogues do their thing? Why not check out streamers and guide creators? Here are a few. There are lots more. Do you have a fave? Let us know.
(Disclaimer: Watch at your own risk – Ravenholdt is not responsible for creator/streamer shenanigans.)

You can also see who is live at the #rogue-streamers channel on Ravenholdt Discord:

And last but not least, a personal shout-out to one of our founders, FieryDemise, who just earned his PhD. Congratulations to him. It has been a long road and hard work; great to see it paying off. And now we are required to call him Dr. Demise.  Which is awesome.

For those who prefer their guides GrayHound flavored, Icy Veins also has deets and updated guides:

Azshara’s Eternal Palace, the new raid, isn’t open yet, but Mizerok has updated his Azerite spreadsheet in anticipation of those lovely new drops:

Ravenholdt Discord: Our lovely TCers are implementing Sims updates. Check out #tc-research and #tc-updates for the latest Sims news. For all essence overviews there’s a new bot command !Essence.
